Parents of a Child (Educational Assessment & EHCP Outcome)
Background / Situation
Earlier this year, a young person we’ll call J was referred to AYC at a time when school had become increasingly difficult. J is a bright, capable, and sensory-sensitive child, but the mainstream school environment was no longer able to meet his needs effectively.
His family knew he had significant potential, but without clear evidence and understanding of how he learned, things were not progressing as they should.
The Issues They Were Experiencing
J was struggling to engage, regulate, and access learning within his existing school environment. Sensory sensitivities and regulation difficulties were creating barriers to progress, and despite his strengths, he was not thriving. The family and school lacked the shared language and clinical evidence needed to secure appropriate educational support.
Our Approach / Solution
AYC completed a comprehensive educational and neurodevelopmental assessment to understand how J learns, how he processes the world, and what support he needs to regulate, engage, and achieve.
We worked closely with the family to ensure the assessment clearly identified both strengths and needs, and provided robust, accessible evidence that could be used by education and statutory services.
Overview of the Assessment Process
- Detailed background and developmental history
- Assessment of learning profile and sensory needs
- Emotional regulation and engagement analysis
- Comprehensive written report
- Formal evidence to support statutory assessment and provision
The Outcome & Wider Impact
The assessment directly informed a successful EHCP application, giving J formal recognition of his needs and access to the right level of funded support.
With the correct provision now in place, J transitioned into a highly supportive secondary school and is now truly thriving.
J now:
- Learns within a small, targeted support group
- Has moved into a top Maths set
- Sings in the choir, performs in school productions, and competes in school and club sports
- Has a small group of close friends who truly understand one another
- Has received school awards for Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Communication, and Initiative
Most importantly, his family now describe him as happy, confident, and proud of himself.
Wider Practical & Financial Impact (Subtle Website Version)
The successful EHCP secured long-term, funded educational support, ensuring the correct placement, staffing, and resources are in place without ongoing financial pressure on the family.
Family Feedback (Summary)
The family described how the assessment finally provided the clarity, language, and evidence they had been missing, allowing J to access the right support and make a positive transition into secondary education.
