It is never too late to understand yourself.
Specialist, NICE-compliant Autism assessments for adults. Discover the “why” behind your life experiences, validate your neurotype, and access the support you deserve.
The Lost Years
Why seek a diagnosis now?
Many adults spend their lives feeling like they are operating on a different operating system to everyone else. You may have been labelled “shy,” “anxious,” or “difficult,” or you may have exhausted yourself “masking” your traits to fit in at work or in relationships.
At AYC, we understand that an adult diagnosis is often a journey of relief. It validates your lived experience. It moves the narrative from “What is wrong with me?” to “This is how my brain works.”
We provide a safe, non-judgemental space to explore your identity with Chartered Clinical Psychologists who understand the nuance of the adult profile.
Clinical Rigour
A respectful, collaborative process.
We do not offer 20-minute “tick-box” diagnoses. Our pathway mirrors the NHS Gold Standard (NICE Guidelines) to ensure your report is robust and legally recognised.
Clinical Interview (Developmental History)
We explore your history using the ADI-R framework.
Note: While it is helpful to have a parent or older relative contribute, we understand this isn’t always possible. We can work with a partner, friend, or your own self-report.
Sensory Processing Measure
Unlike many standard assessments, we include a specific Sensory Processing evaluation. This helps us identify if you have hypersensitivities (e.g., to office lights, noise, or textures) that may be contributing to burnout.
The Assessment Session (ADOS-2)
You will attend our Warrington centre for the ADOS-2 (Module 4).
What is it? This is not a test. It is a structured conversation and set of interactive tasks designed specifically for verbally fluent adults. It allows our clinicians to observe your social communication style in real-time.
Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) Review
You are not assessed by a single opinion. Your case is reviewed by a team (including Clinical Psychologists and Speech & Language Therapists) to ensure accuracy.
Feedback & Report
You receive a comprehensive diagnostic report that can be used for Employment Tribunals, University Support (DSA), and NHS records.
What changes after diagnosis?
Beyond personal validation, a formal diagnosis unlocks legal protections and tangible support.
Workplace Protections
The Equality Act
Employers have a legal duty to make “Reasonable Adjustments” for neurodivergent staff. Our report provides the evidence you need to request changes like quiet workspaces or noise-cancelling headphones.
University Support
DSA Funding
If you are a student, a diagnosis allows you to apply for the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). This can fund specialist mentoring, software, and study support.
Mental Health
Wellbeing
Understanding your sensory needs and social energy limits allows you to build a life that prevents autistic burnout and promotes long-term wellbeing.
Why Choose AYC?
Expert care, close to home.
NICE Compliant
We follow the same guidelines as the NHS. This means your diagnosis is recognised by GPs and Mental Health Services.
The Female/Masking Profile
Our clinicians are highly experienced in identifying Autism in women and those who mask heavily, presentations that are often missed by generalists.
Sensory Friendly Centre
Our Warrington clinic is designed to be calm and low-arousal, removing the stress of a “clinical” hospital environment.
Common Questions
Yes. While the diagnostic criteria require evidence of traits in childhood, we can use other informants (partners, siblings) or clinical judgment based on your memory and current presentation.
Generally, no. Being autistic does not stop you from driving (unless you have specific medical/attention issues) or working. In fact, it grants you legal protections against discrimination.
Autism is not treated with medication. However, if you have co-occurring anxiety or depression, our Clinical Psychologists can recommend therapeutic approaches tailored to neurodivergent minds.
